What is an implant?

Implant treatment is a conservative treatment used for missing teeth, and is performed without any intervention to the healthy teeth. When chewing function of teeth implants is compared to the other prostheses, a better chewing ability is gained, as well as obtained chewing power is similar to the natural teeth.

How implant treatment is done?

Implant treatment is in generally performed when patient is awake,only with a sedation of the related area. Although implant placement is a surgical procedure, it is much more comfortable and faster than tooth extraction.

At what conditions is implant placement performed?

Implant is a kind of prosthesis that can be applied to this area in cases when permanent teeth are missing, imitating the root of the teeth and aiming to restore aesthetics and chewing ability there. If there is enough space in the chin bone, it may be successfully applied for all missing teeth. In addition, implant treatment is applied in order to increase the retention of the “removable full dentures”, also known as “palatal prosthesis”, and thus increases comfort of the patient. Today, “removable or fixed (ie removable or non-removable) implant retained prostheses” are preferred even in patients who have lost all their teeth. A dental implant can be placed both in the same session following the extraction of the tooth, or can be inserted on average 2-3 months after the recovery in the extraction area.

Care Instructions After Dental Implant Placement

Same as patients with prostheses and dental fillingts, those who have implants should pay special attention to the mouth hygiene. You should brush your teeth and implant supported prostheses at least twice a day, clean areas between teeth and implants with dental floss and surface brushes. Also try to pay attention not to miss your check up examinations, and follow up your dentist recommendations.

Do implants lead to allergy or cancer?

One of the most frequently asked questions is if implant cause cancer or allergy. Performed investigations haven't shown any signs of cancerogenity of implants. Moreover, teeth implants are performed from titanium, metal which has a high compatibility with body. Orthopedic titanium implants are also successfully used in the other body bones for a long years. With regard to allergy, it has been shown that they may rarely cause allergic reactions in individuals who are very sensitive or in bodies with intense allergies to other metals.

If there is any age limit for implant treatment?

However there is no age limit for implant treatment, it would be preferable to wait until adolescence is over. In the following age, even if bone structure changes, there are no obstacles for implant placement. Age range for this procedure is wide.

How long should we wait to place crowns onto the implant (upper portion of the tooth)?

The routine period is 3-4 months on average. However, depending on the degree of hardness of the bone, this period can be extended for 1-2 months. If more than one implant are to be placed, is it done at the same session? This condition depends on the patients and then on the physician's will. Some patients want to finish their treatment in several short sessions, others prefer to finish all their treatment in one session. However, there are no obstacles for placement of all implants at the same session. Is is possible to use one implant throughout life? Yes, the same as our teeth, poor oral hygiene may lead to teeth loss, as well as you may use them for all life if you take good care of them.

Why implant treatment is more preferable than bridge treatment at solving missing teeth problem?

Bridge prostheses are those prostheses which connect both sides of the cavity to each other with a support for the teeth, requiring cutting of the teeth, placed behind and on the front of the gaps of missing teeth. In implant-supported prostheses, since the support is provided with a dental implant that imitates the tooth root, there is no need to cut and cover the teeth next to it. For this reason, the preference of implant supported prostheses rather than bridge prostheses appears as a more protective treatment option for other teeth in the mouth.
