Essential tremor is a neurological disorder that causes involuntary and rhythmic movements in a specific part of the body.Tremors can affect the hands, legs, head, and voice. It is ten times more common than Parkinson's disease. This disease, often confused with Parkinson's disease, affects approximately 60 million people worldwide.

What Are the Symptoms of Essential Tremor (Tremor Disorder)?

●Hand and leg tremors occurring during movement.

●Head tremors that occur while sitting or standing.

Smart Ultrasound Therapy is a safe, non-surgical, and incision-free treatment method utilizing advanced technology, designed for essential tremor and Parkinson's disease characterized primarily by tremors. This technology aims to deactivate the region causing tremors by using 1,024 high-intensity ultrasound waves guided through the scalp to a targeted area of the brain via magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in combination.

What Is Smart Ultrasound Therapy?

Ultrasound waves are focused on a small region of the brain called the "thalamus," which is considered the target point for the tremor. Energy is delivered via these focused ultrasound waves, and the energy level is gradually increased. The energy level is increased until an improvement in the patient's condition is observed and the most effective dose is reached. Subsequently, a small lesion similar to the effect of a laser is created to treat the targeted area of the brain with precision and control. In this way, the vibration is eliminated. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) enables real-time monitoring of the brain, precise targeting, and tracking of the heat generated by ultrasound waves.

Before starting Smart Ultrasound Therapy, the patient's hair must be trimmed so as not to interfere with the ultrasound waves.A frame is placed on the patient's head to stabilize it and calculate the necessary coordinates. Local anesthesia is administered during this procedure. The patient must remain awake so that the precise region of the brain can be targeted, the response to treatment can be evaluated, and potential side effects can be minimized.During the treatment, the patient is asked at certain intervals without getting up from the MRI table to perform movements such as opening and closing their hands or writing. Our experienced team maintains communication with the patient throughout the procedure, ensuring a sense of comfort and confidence is upheld during the entire process.

Although treatment outcomes vary from person to person, clinical studies show a high rate of improvement in patients.Following Smart Ultrasound treatment, patients may become able to perform simple daily activities, such as signing their name or drinking from a glass without spilling.Clinical studies show that the reduction in tremor can persist for 5 years or longer.Smart Ultrasound Therapy does not eliminate the underlying cause of the tremor; however, it offers hope to patients who experience difficulties in daily life due to hand tremors and whose quality of life is significantly affected.

It is considered an effective and safe treatment method for tremors. The procedure is painless; however, mild headache or dizziness may occur in some patients. Some of the following side effects may also occur within the first 30 days after treatment:

  • Balance disorder or difficulty walking.
  • Numbness or tingling.
  • Muscle weakness.
  • Lisping.

Patients report that these potential side effects are generally mild and resolve within 30 days. Furthermore, since the procedure is performed without an incision, there is no risk of bleeding or infection. Since no intervention is performed outside the targeted area during treatment, other regions of the brain remain unaffected.

Smart Ultrasound Therapy is used for essential tremor and Parkinson's disease, as well as for other conditions associated with tremors. To determine whether treatment is appropriate, the type and severity of the tremor and the patient's general health status are evaluated.

In addition, a computed tomography (CT) scan is required to determine whether patients are suitable candidates for Smart Ultrasound Therapy. Patients with pacemakers, deep brain stimulators, spinal or bone stabilization devices, metal clips, screws, or other metal implants may not be suitable for treatment.

These patients must be thoroughly evaluated for MRI compatibility to prevent potential harm arising from the device's strong magnetic field.

If the patient's general health condition is not suitable for tolerating the procedure, or if they cannot remain in the same position for approximately 3 hours, they may not be a suitable candidate for this treatment. There are other restrictions as well, and the final decision regarding the patient's suitability is made by the physician following the necessary evaluations.

  • Patients with metal implants that are not MRI-compatible, such as pacemakers.
  • Patients with advanced-stage kidney disease or those undergoing dialysis.
  • Patients with unstable cardiac conditions or severe hypertension.
  • Patients exhibiting behaviors associated with alcohol or substance dependence.
  • Patients with a history of abnormal bleeding.
  • Patients with cerebrovascular disease.
  • Patients with brain tumors.
  • Individuals who are unable or unwilling to remain in a fixed position for an extended period during treatment.
  • Pregnant women.
